What is the CMA certification and who awards it?
The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a globally recognized professional credential awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). It validates expertise in financial planning, analysis, control, decision support, and professional ethics — making it the premier credential for management accountants and financial professionals worldwide.

What are the eligibility requirements to sit for the CMA exam?
To earn the CMA you must: (1) hold an active IMA membership, (2) have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any field, (3) complete 2 years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management (before or after the exam), and (4) pass both exam parts within a 3-year window.

What is the structure of the CMA exam?
The CMA exam has 2 parts, each 4 hours long. Each part includes 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 2 essay questions. The passing score is 360 out of 500. Part 1 covers Financial Planning, Performance & Analytics. Part 2 covers Strategic Financial Management. Case-Based Questions (CBQs) are also included in the current format.

When can I take the CMA exam?
The CMA exam is offered during three testing windows each year: January–February, May–June, and September–October. Exams are administered at Prometric testing centers worldwide. You have 3 years from your registration date to pass both parts.

How much does the CMA exam cost in total?
Total costs for a professional member: IMA annual membership ($280) + CMA entrance fee ($250 one-time) + exam fees ($495 per part × 2 = $990). Total: approximately $1,520. Students pay lower rates: $49 IMA membership, $188 entrance fee, $370 per exam part. Passing on your first attempt avoids costly retake fees.
